William B. Helmreich is professor of sociology at the City University Graduate Center (CUNY) and City College of New York and Dalton Conley is University Professor of the Social Sciences and Chair of Sociology at NYU.
Over the course of four years, Helmreich ventured to every corner of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island and spoke with hundreds of New Yorkers from every part of the globe and from every walk of life. Their stories and his are the subject of this book.
